General Information and Advocacy Assistance

ACLD provides general information and basic advocacy assistance to parents without a fee. We are able to provide general information and answer questions on a variety of topics such as the following:

  • Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD)
  • Special education laws and your rights under these laws
  • Navigating the special education maze
  • Requesting an educational evaluation from your school district
  • Qualifying for special education services and programs
  • Related topics

Printed information regarding Specific Learning Disabilities is also available.

Consultation Services

ACLD has many years of experience and the expertise to provide a wide range of individualized consultation services to parents.

Some examples of the types of fee-for-service consultation that are available are as follows:

  • Assisting parents in understanding their child's learning patterns, diagnostic test results, and/or Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Helping to develop an individualized instructional program and/or Individualized Education Program (IEP) for a child. This could include how to measure or monitor your child’s educational progress and/or finding research-based instructional methods and strategies that meet your child’s educational needs
  • Planning for the transition from school to work
  • Assisting the parents and the graduating high school student with SLD in choosing an appropriate college or post-secondary educational program
  • Entering the world of work

Workshops and Training

Fee-for-service workshops or training can be provided to a variety of parent groups such as PTAs. Some examples are as follows:

  • A Layperson’s Guide to Understanding Specific Learning Disabilities and Their Causes
  • Dealing Effectively with Children’s Learning Differences or SLD at Home
  • Understanding What Effective Teaching Methods Are
  • Effective Teaching Techniques for Students with SLD
  • Understanding Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities
  • What are Learning Styles (information processing)
  • The Theory of Multiple Intelligences
  • Socialization and the Student with SLD
  • Developing Study Skills with the Inefficient Learner

Workshops can all be specially designed to meet an audience’s needs.
